The Alzheimer's Society
In 2015, Scifi Wales is extremely proud to be supporting The Alzheimer's Society as its nominated charity for this event. Alzheimer's Society is a membership organisation, which works to improve the quality of life of people affected by dementia in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and they are the leading support and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers.
There are 800,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to one million by 2021 and the Alzheimer's Society's fight for a better world for people with all types of dementia takes a wide range of forms. Through their network of local services, they touch the lives of over 30,000 people every week, providing practical services and support for people with dementia and their carers.
The Alzheimer's Society demands a better future for everyone affected by all forms of dementia. With the help of their members and supporters, they campaign for the rights of people with dementia and those who care for them through a combination of detailed policy analysis, lobbying, influencing and direct action. They also invest heavily in research and operate support services locally, online and over the telephone.
What is Dementia? Each person will experience dementia differently
The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These changes are often small to start with, but for someone with dementia they have become severe enough to affect daily life. A person with dementia may also experience changes in their mood or behaviour.
Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease or a series of strokes. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia but not all dementia is due to Alzheimer's. The specific symptoms that someone with dementia experiences will depend on the parts of the brain that are damaged and the disease that is causing the dementia. You can find out more on the What is dementia? page on the Alzheimer's Society website.
Types of Dementia There are many diseases that result in dementia
Dementia is an umbrella term. It describes the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by certain diseases or conditions. There are many different types of dementia although some are far more common than others.
The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer's disease, during the course of the disease, the chemistry and structure of the brain changes, leading to the death of brain cells. Other causes of dementia include vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies and fronto-temporal dementia. To read more about the different types of dementia, please visit the Types of dementia page on the Alzheimer's Society website.
Living with Dementia resources available to you and your family
When a person with dementia finds that their mental abilities are declining, they often feel vulnerable and in need of reassurance and support. The people closest to them - including their carers, friends and family - need to do everything they can to help the person to retain their sense of identity and feelings of self-worth.
If you have concerns about Alzheimer's disease or about any other form of dementia, the Alzheimer's Society National Dementia Helpline is available by calling 0300 222 1122. They can provide information, support, guidance and signposting to other appropriate organisations. Other support is available and detailed information can be found on the Living with dementia or Caring for a person with dementia pages on the Alzheimer's Society website.
